Words from community member, Christine Carpenter

When I became a mom, I heard a call from within to write. Connecting with myself in this way has been the greatest gift. One that I can now see, five years later, is thanks to motherhood – not in spite of it.

Hi, I’m Jackie!

You may not know me just yet so I want to take a moment to introduce myself! I am a writer and a mother of two, and also the founder of Motherscope! If you join our membership — I’ll be one (of many) you can count on to support you on your writing journey!

I’ve been a writer for as far back as I can remember — as a child, in my teens, in college, grad school, before becoming a mom and after. I’ve even felt like a writer when I wasn’t writing. You may be familiar with the feeling — that writing is ever-present on your mind; it doesn’t leave you. Sometimes I say I have a love/hate relationship with it. Because it feels like a part of me, something I can’t just put away in storage when I don’t want to see it.

For so long we’ve heard about writing being this solitary practice. That loneliness is a part of the trade. We’re taught to hide our work, to be suspicious of sharing it, and to not even think of revealing it until we’ve made countless edits (allowing perfectionism to rear it’s ugly head).

When I became a mom, I heard a call from within to write. It had been years since I’d done any creative writing, and this yearning was the strongest I’d ever felt. I wanted to hold onto my sense of self, I didn’t want to lose her to motherhood. I wanted to be more than a mother and to also make sense of motherhood, to treasure it, to honor the hard and turn the beautiful into keepsakes on the page. Connecting with myself in this way has been the greatest gift. One that I can now see, five years later, is thanks to motherhood – not in spite of it. I want this for every mom.

After working with writers of all kind and walks of life, I’ve found that we all require the same things to maintain a consistent writing practice. It’s not a secret, and it sounds so simple when I spell it out, but to find the right amount of each ingredient has felt rare.

To embrace writing in our lives we all need: accountability, inspiration, support and community. Sure, there are writers who go it alone, but if you’re here, that’s likely not you. And if you are a mother writer, you know that the challenges that go into following your personal pursuits. We need a community, our people who know what we desire and are there to remind us of that. Other moms who are honest and make you feel a little less alone. Writers who inspire us just by writing alongside us and sharing when they can. We need a space we can go to where we are encouraged to show up as our whole selves, so we can do that very brave thing, maybe the bravest thing, we feel called to do – write our own story.

I have seen this space created through Motherscope’s workshops and events, and I’ve taken the best parts of these experiences and put them into this Writers’ Club. I hope to see you there very soon!

  • you expect to receive private 1:1 coaching (this may be offered at later time, but as an additional service)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Absolutely! However, before joining, know that most members of our community are moms. We all come from mothers, and we all have stories about motherhood. Motherscope’s mission is to elevate the stories of mothers as we believe that stories have the power to solve our world problems. We prioritize writing as the most accessible tool to document and communicate our experiences and the best way to do that consistently is with the support of a community. If our mission and process resonates with you, we’d love for you to join.

  • While the weekly zooms are a cornerstone of the membership, they are just one aspect; we will have many other opportunities for you to connect with other members, even if you cannot attend the live zooms. We will have ongoing online discussion threads and spaces to celebrate each other’s writing accomplishments, and the zooms will be available for you to watch when it’s convenient for you for up to 30 days.

We designed this membership to cater to different personality types and learning styles. If you learn well in a self-paced environment and are ready to connect to other members in the chats, discussion questions, and other content threads, we’d encourage you to sign up.

While we love seeing community members connect with one another, the true connection we wish to see fostered in this membership is the connection with yourself. If the Live schedule does not work for you, you can still make a commitment to participate on your own time, and gain so much value from the experience.

Finally, if your schedule happens to open up so that you can make a live Zoom once in awhile, that’s great! Plus, if you miss one week, you can show up for the next without the pressure to “catch up” ahead of time. We designed this membership with moms in mind; come when you can, show up as you are.

  • Mighty Networks is not your traditional social media app. It is a free platform accessible via web and app that prioritizes creating space for active, engaging connections within private communities and networks. Because we value holding space for brave storytelling and genuine connections, it is vital to have a platform that is private, accessible, and that minimizes distraction.

We see the Mighty Networks platform as an opportunity to get away from the distractions and mom guilt traps on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, so you can focus your precious time on engaging with a supportive community, learning, and having a space you can show up as your whole self to share and discuss writing.

Mighty Networks is also where all the content each month is stored so you have only one place to go for everything you need – from Zoom access to message boards, writing resources, and more.

  • Since we designed this membership with moms in mind, we want to make sure we are honoring your time. The flow of each month is such that even if you miss a week, you can jump into the next week’s content without feeling like you have to “catch up.” That being said, we want everyone to have an opportunity to watch recent content you might have missed, and we believe that 30 days will give you a chance to catch up here and there without creating an overwhelming backlog of meetings you feel obligated to watch.

  • While we often look for moments to make our Lives more interactive and get community members to share, at no point during our Lives will you be required to share your writing with the whole group. Any opportunities for sharing during Lives are on a voluntary basis. During Week 1’s Masterclass & Mom Salon, there is a short breakout group discussion where you will be randomly assigned to small groups of 3-5 people to talk about a specific topic, but you are welcome to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable – and are not expected to read your writing to the group.

  • Yes! This membership is for all types of writers; professional, recreational, aspiring, beginning, and experienced. We have members who are working on novels, who have volumes of published poetry, essays, and hybrid writing. We also have members who enjoy journaling for their own wellbeing and keep most of their writing private. We have writers who have newly discovered a love of writing since becoming mothers and are following that call wherever it takes them. Whether you identify with any of these paths or not, we believe that the community support and inspiration you’ll gain in this group will help any writing projects you’re working on.

  • By joining as a Founding Member, you are automatically locked in at the current monthly rate. This means your monthly “dues” will never increase so long as you stay inside the membership.

  • While we strongly recommend that you commit for at least 3 months to get an accurate impression of the impact of ongoing writing support within our community, you can cancel at any time.

At any point thereafter, if you wish to end your membership, simply send a 30-day written notice of cancellation to community@motherscope.com. Refunds are not available as this membership allows access to intellectual property.

Be aware, however, that your monthly rate is not locked in if you choose to re-join at a later date if the price has increased.
