Unassisted Home Birth

By Laura Foley

Doubled over—pushing,
and pulling my daughter
all at once, as hard

my slippery hands holding
her little arms,
both of us soaked,
same liquids, same sweat,
an entirely new life
daily more independent—
a woman now, daily
more her own.
